CYLINDER LUBRICATION-TRENDS & DEVELOPMENTS
ABSTRACT:
Marine Diesel Engine Cylinder Lubrication has seen changes in past five decades with each change bringing in some improvements. High quality lubricants are a definite necessity in the modern two-stroke Marine Diesel Engines, while considering ring and liner wear. Wear mechanisms have been researched upon and wear profiles have shown significant betterment. Research had focused on improvement in lubricant quality but largely conventional lubrication methodology had prevailed. Apart from the quality of the lubricants, the methods of lubricant application have also seen some changes. Two of the latest developments in the methods are the Alpha ACC and the SIP (Swirl Injection Principle) technology. This paper tries to trace the trends and developments and present these technologies which could prove to be cost effective in times to come.
The pressure charged marine two-stroke engines, over the last few decades have increased in power ratings. While developing engines, crosshead bearings have posed lubrication problems due to the constant loading and oscillatory movements. These make hydrodynamic regimes difficult to exist. This area apart, lubrication of liner and piston rings to minimise wear and power loss has been another area of difficulty. With the use of residual fuels in place of distillate fuels, lubrication was approached with greater concern. The fuels with higher viscosity ranges and their Sulphur content becoming higher demand better quality oils and effective application as well.
