“Twin Shaft Underwater Highway Channel”
ABSTRACT:
Highways have been a means of intensive network for a country and this is a dream come true through the pioneering works like Golden Quadrilateral project in India. Encapsulation of Highway and Structural engineering can create wonders. In context with this, Underwater Highway can be another feather in the cap.
Underwater Highway can be of the essence if the highway reduces the traveling distance radically from one destination to the other and proves to be very much competent in the long run with reference to the fuel and time save. In this dissertation work, similar underwater highway segment, linking two major towns, Vasco and Panaji, has been taken for the structural analysis through finite element method. At present the distance between these two towns by road is around 32 Km. and is suppose to be abridged to 15 Km. through the underwater highway project. This project will help the state in promoting tourism and escalating the commerce between the two districts of Goa.
In this dissertation work planning, aligning and structural analysis of underwater highway has been given due importance. Alignment has been carried out using the bathymetric data, which has been processed using software’s Surfer and Grapher. Heeding is done towards the Finite Element Analysis of the underwater highway using the STAADPRO software package. Structure is of steel and the analysis has helped to get various deign parameters such as the thickness of the steel plates required, positions and numbers of stiffeners required, specification of the structural steel to be used for the construction of the structure, the safe design stress for the plates, safe value of sub grade of Modulus reaction (k) etc.
