ABSTRACT:

Necessity is the mother of investigation. As our need increases we have to go forward. Today the basic need of modern world is Energy.

Conventional method of power generation has heavily increased the degree of environmental pollution. Also conventional energy generation method requires natural raw material which is limited and also may lead to the danger of being extinct. Also the rate of energy consumption has increased rapidly so this leads to the need of developing the alternative sources that is non-conventional energy sources.

The objective of this paper is to conserve the conventional energy sources by the use of new non-conventional energy resource "FUEL CELL" . Fuel cells are revolutionary new electrochemical devices that produce energy with extremely high efficiency and absolutely no pollution. FUEL CELL produces electricity without consumption and eliminating the need of moving parts in process.

The contents of this paper includes need of fuel cell, basic principle of FUEL CELL, its working, its current types, general applications of fuel cell, an introduction of the Fuel Cells in future automobiles has been enlightened and also other developments are considered, reason behind its slow progress, advantages and disadvantages etc.

Paper also gives where it was discovered and in what way it was turned into reality. It also gives its research and development in India and abroad. Various preferences like Honda, BHEL's research, US fuel cell organization are considered as reference.
