BASIC FLIGHT MECHANICS

Forces

Flight is one of the finest phenomena known to man. The complexity involved in keeping a heavier than air object in perfect control, high above the ground is what makes flight so challenging.
There are mainly 4 forces acting on an aeroplane.

Lift is the force that acts upwards to keep the aircraft afloat. It is the component of all aerodynamic forces generated by the aircraft surfaces perpendicular to the direction of the velocity vector [2].

Drag is the aerodynamic resistance to motion of a body through air or any other viscous fluid. “Drag” is the enemy of flight [3]. Aeronautical engineers try to reduce drag to a minimum, striking a balance between minimum drag and strength of the airframe.
Thrust is the force that opposes drag. It is the forward propelling force developed by the aircraft power plant – propellers, jet engines or rockets.

Weight acts vertically downwards at all times and is the sum of the dry weight of the aircraft and the useful payload.
As an useful thumb rule, to keep the object afloat in air,
