ABSTRACT:

Automobile industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Due to the presence of a number of companies there is a competetion going on between them, which demands better technology to come into picture. So, there is scope for a lot of research in this field as none of the machines made yet is perfect, both in performance and in design. Also the engines used have very low efficiencies, so efforts can be made to improve the terms. Most of the present day vehicles run on conventional fuels which basically are petroleum product. Now as we know these fuels have limited stocks and soon we will be facing a crisis on their avalibility, so its better to be prepared well in time. So we have to work on the machines which use renewable sources of energy such as solar energy, fuel cells, etc.

In this paper we will discuss the modern trends that are coming into picture in the recent times which basically are trying to exploit the renewable sources of energy to derive the vehicles, also there are many modifications going in the design considerations of the engines, new and new materials are being introduced to faithfully satisfy the ideal characteristics required. In this regard new technologies like hybrid vehicles, solar cars, flex fuel vehicles, bi fuel vehicles, fuel cell vehicles etc are being developed. At the same time lightweight materials including aluminum, plastics, magnesium, carbon fiber, and metal matrix composites are used to reduce the weight of the vehicles. Using lightweight materials manufacturers can build more fuel efficient vehicles without sacrificing safety.

Moreover developments are going on in the field of fuel injection systems like the direct injection stratified charge engine which attempts to incorporate many of the high efficiency features of a diesel into a spark-ignited gasoline engine. Automobiles now a days are designed keeping in view the aerodynamic modeling, which results in overcoming the drastic effects of the wind resistance and the air drag. Last but not the least future automobiles can be made to run using the principles of magnetic levitation.

So in all this paper goes through the modern engine design, modern materials, alternate fuel vehicles, aerodynamic body design, better fuel injection systems, hybridization of two energy sources in one automobile and magnetic levitation principles.
