SOAP A FUEL FOR FUTURE AUTOMOBILES
ABSTRACT:
The use of fossil fuels in vehicles produce one tenth of the carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming. In addition they emit a wide range of other pollutants which give rise to acid rain, smog and respiratory diseases.
For years, visionaries have proposed that the world should switch from using hydrocarbons to pure hydrogen. It is the most abundant element, which on combustion produces only non-polluting water and heat. Unfortunately, the use of hydrogen has been coupled with a large number of storage problems. Thus although some have heralded hydrogen as the energy of the future, some sceptics say it will be just that – a future fuel which never makes it out of test cars.
However the dream of clean, safe hydrogen-powered cars are now much closer with the invention of Auto-giant DaimlerChrysler’s ‘Natrium’ - a test vehicle. Thanks to a tank of salt water and the raw material used for washing powder i.e. borax. This soapy substance is capable of doing the trick. It’s strange, but true. The previous drawbacks faced by use of hydrogen are overcome by it. It’s absolutely non-polluting and in the event of a crash, the safest.
The following report briefs the reader with the available ‘Hydrogen Storage’ methods. It mainly deals with the ‘Hydrogen On Demand’ technology developed by Millennium Cell that overcomes most of the challenges faced by the present techniques in utilizing hydrogen. Although it speaks about the implementation of the technology in ‘Internal Combustion Engines’, it mainly appreciates it’s application to ‘Fuel Cells’ as they are more energy efficient. Above all, the report acknowledges the efforts of ‘DaimlerChrysler’ in developing this unique system and highlights the benefits offered by it.
