Wireless Network Security

Wireless Network Security

ABSTRACT:

Organizations of all sizes are installing and operating wireless networks. The wireless LANs are also called as Wi-Fi networks. Low cost, ease of installation and flexibility are some of the benefits which are propelling the widespread adoption of wireless technology.

While the benefits of WLANs are substantial, wireless technology introduces security holes that network administrators must take into account if they are to adequately protect their organization from intruders, cyber terrorists and unauthorized users. Wireless networks are notoriously easy to compromise when improperly installed or operated and once compromised, a WLAN gives intruders a open conduit to the entire network which puts mission-critical information in jeopardy.

The seminar introduces wireless networking and presents the steps for a layered security approach which can be taken to operate a WLAN in a secure manner. It discusses the four basic steps, namely, wireless deployment and policies, wireless access control, perimeter defense and application security which when applied can provide an intrusion prevention system which is potent and proactive against the attacks and vulnerabilities unique to a wireless enabled environment.
