Design Strategies of Hardware Accelerators for Wireless Broadband Systems

Design Strategies of Hardware Accelerators for Wireless Broadband Systems

Wireless Broadband System (WBS) is a technology which involves many implementation challenges and special design methodologies. This white paper throws light on the implementation challenges in wireless broadband and different approaches that can be adopted to overcome these challenges, especially how hardware accelerators can assist in overcoming these industry challenges. Also it discusses about the importance of hardware/software partitioning in the wireless broadband systems design. In the end, some of the design challenges of functionally critical blocks of wireless broadband systems are explained. This whitepaper proposes a cost accounting oriented approach to allocate a cost to an Application based on the premise that Applications are the IT face to Business, and use the Application Cost as a basis to derive the cost of IT delivery to Business.

Introduction

Wireless Broadband Systems (WBS) is a booming technology that presents considerable challenges and holds great promise. The growing expectations for higher data rates and lower latency are compelling designers to adopt special design methodologies that can help them achieve desirable performance. Usage of hardware accelerators is one such methodology. Hardware accelerators allow certain complex functions to be executed faster than their software counterparts. Hardware accelerators are designed specially for computationally intensive algorithms which are abundant in wireless broadband. The main difference between hardware and software is concurrency, allowing hardware (FPGA) to run much faster than software (DSP).
