GIS Based Information Portal for E&P Enterprises

GIS Based Information Portal for E&P Enterprises

Analytics and reporting plays a vital role for the growth and sustenance of any organization today. .. The revolution of automation and IT in the last few decades has led to development of multiple states of applications to address complex business issues,as a result of which the workforce has to deal with multiple complex applications in day to day operations. Geographical Information system is a universal medium for communication, easily understood and appreciated by all. It has been used from time immemorial when maps were drawn on caves to depict the route for hunting animals thousands of years ago.

The paper highlights the evolution of GIS from time immemorial and the ease of using it as a model to depict business information on an interactive map. The document discusses various business needs of Exploration & Production organizations and the IT systems already in place to cater to these requirements. This article highlights the predicament of implementing so many applications. It presents a simplistic approach of introducing a common GIS layer for extracting information from these disparate systems. The portal based approach discusses on fulfilling information needs of majority of personnel by mining information from various transactional as well as static systems without getting trained to exploit these contemporary systems.

It discusses on the various building blocks and basic requirements for executing the approach and the complexities of realizing such an approach. It puts across TCS’s capabilities and experiences for helping the exploratory companies to implement such an innovative portal. The exposition focuses on some of the features with representative figures. It also
discusses how the portal can be further extended as Enterprise Portal for these companies.

Introduction

GIS offers users a new dimension of analysis, a visual dimension. In a single glance, users can tell what is happening across the whole map at a given point in time. Because of its visual properties, almost by definition, a map represents its subject in a broader context. In a single glance, one can depict what's going on over the whole map at a single moment in time. GIS offers rich contextualization that might otherwise take sheets of text to convey. It is a medium which is easily understood by most people.

For over 4500 years, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have been used to provide a graphic, spatial representation of vital information. From its origins in the flood data recorded on Babylonian clay tablets to the technologically agile GIS applications available today, GIS offers rich contextualization that would otherwise take pages of text to describe. Today's GIS, with the help of enhancements in computing, have been able to overcome the limitation of revealing information across time and has made maps into dynamic tools for searching information. Through integration with other enterprise applications or extraction of information from third party sources or public repositories, a GIS can add the fourth dimension to 3D visualization (with time as the fourth component).
