Modelling tools–Interoperability constraints and approaches
Business Process Modelling lays the foundation on which several enterprise initiatives are dependent. There are several aspects which come into play when an enterprise considers process modelling. Why model one's business processes; probably for documentation, for process improvement techniques discovery or for trouble areas investigation. Think about changing as-is to a completely different or relatively standardized to-be process. Problems arise at the time of correct fit modelling tool selection and portability.
The correct fit modelling tool depends on various criteria. One of the most flummoxing of these is ability to port models freely – horizontally (across modelling tools) and vertically (other technology tools).
This paper looks at the need for interoperability in the modelling tools space and the need for standardized techniques that ensure 'completeness' and 'correctness' in interoperability.
It takes an agnostic viewpoint of existing tools and how they aim at 'fitting in' .
