International Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing "Issues, Trends and Practices (ICSM-2011) At Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, Rajasthan

Introduction

Expansion of economic activity led to the concerns about climate change, energy security and natural resource scarcity. It is well documented that manufacturing consumes more than a third of the energy used globally, hence the concern for sustainability has grown manifold during the last two decades. All major industries are taking great interest in sustainable manufacturing and are undertaking a number of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives; but progress falls far short of meeting these pressing challenges. Improvements in efficiency in some nations have been offset by increasing consumptions in other nations, particularly the emerging nations. The current pattern of consumption and methods of manufacturing in emerging countries suggest that the UN’s indicators for sustainable development like greenhouse gas emission, waste volume, air quality and non-renewable material are far short of the targets.

The main aim of conference is to provide an interdisciplinary platform of sustainable manufacturing for academicians, practitioners, engineers and students working in various areas under the umbrella of sustainable development. Participants from industry, academics and government across the globe will share and discuss the latest research & practices and future challenges in development of innovative products, processes and practices with emphasis on environmental, economic and societal aspects of manufacturing.
