USE OF FLY ASH AND IT’S ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

USE OF FLY ASH AND IT’S ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

ABSTRACT

Fly ash is a waste material from thermal power plants, which forces a great disposalc problem besides causing atmospheric pollution due to its being easily air borne (on account of its fineness, in the range of 2500-6000 sq. cm/gm), which is a great nuisance for people. Besides it causes contamination of ground and surface water, due to heavy metal leaching. Therefore, a good deal of work and applications on the utilization of fly ash has been undertaken world over. The major area of fly ash utilization is either as a cementation material or a brick manufacturing material. Fly ash mission adopted a comprehensive strategy to focus on 10 areas simultaneously. Among these, road/embankments are major areas, so different techniques for its use are developed. Aside the fly ash can be used in development of land, road, agriculture, mines, and irrigation projects. Manufacture of utility products and extraction of valuable material from fly ash is also done. Fly ash is a resource material which should be utilized. The past 5 years have witnessed a significant growth in technological level with respect to fly ash disposal and utilization in the country and in the next millennium fly ash in itself is going to emerge as a major industry. Fly ash is no more a waste, and “to make cash out of ash“, so many techniques are being developed.
