WASTE MANAGEMENT THROUGH GEOTECHNICAL REUSE
Abstract
Past few decades have brought to fore the issues of environment in sharp focus and we are now aiming towards a zero waste society. The disposal in landfill is not a sustainable solution for the long term due to the limited availability of land space. The hierarchy of waste management starts with waste minimization. So this paper aims at the waste minimisal by using them for geotechnical construction .Some of waste materials like flyash, mine tailings, mining overburden, C&D waste, wastes discarded by slate, marble, china clay industries etc have Silica as their basic mineral, so a positive substitute to the soil that we use for the construction of the embankment, filling the low lying areas etc. Thus helping to preserve the valuable agricultural top soil and also reducing the cost of excavation. Since a large waste is generated from the Thermal power plants, the potential of flyash has to be tapped. The various properties of the waste material, their applications, limitations and the other social issues related to it have been discussed taking up a few case studies. Geotechnical waste utilization can serve not only to prevent the negative environmental impact but also to preserve and protect the nature.
