2nd Conference On Management Case Developme At The ICFAI Inst of Science and Technology, Hyderabad

CALL FOR CASES

It is now more than 100 years since business management was first introduced as a discipline in the world’s universities.
Initially, management education concentrated on teaching students the core knowledge and skills that are required of a manager in the form of management science and technology.
Yet educators increasingly recognized that business management is as much an art as a science. Therefore, educators inevitably had to grapple with the problem of finding a way to train students in the art of management if they had to make their
management education programs relevant to the world outside academia.
No management decision is simple and the decision maker must integrate complex ideas from different domains to optimize
outcomes given the current state of the environment and the specifics of a given situation. The challenge for educators was to devise a method by which students could experience situations that require such integrated thinking. To build industry ready management graduates they had to find a way of bringing the real world into the classroom so that students could develop an integrated cross domain approach to applied management decision making. Thus was born the case method of business education.
Traditional lecture oriented pedagogical methods prove to be less than satisfactory from the point of view of retaining student
interest and achieving required learning outcomes in a business school. It is an acknowledged fact that adult students learn by doing and not by listening. Case analysis and discussion provide a convenient way to provide management students with an opportunity to ‘do’.
Business decision making is a team sport and a vital skill that every business manager needs to have is the ability to participate in group based decision making processes. This soft skill involves the real time ability to speak, listen and assimilate within a group discussion forum in order to exploit the synergies of multiple points of view while driving towards an optimized decision in an uncertain environment. Cases provide students with the opportunity to develop these skills in a classroom.
Given its myriad advantages, it is not surprising that successful business executives repeatedly cite case discussions during their student days as the single most important academic source of their success.
This conference aims to provide a forum where developed cases in all domains of business management can be presented, discussed and analyzed.
