One Day National Seminar on RECENT ADVANCES IN POWER ELECTRONICS FOR FUEL CELL BASED SYSTEMS
One Day National Seminar on
RECENT ADVANCES IN POWER ELECTRONICS FOR FUEL CELL BASED SYSTEMS
27th April 2013
Organized by
School of Electrical Engineering (SELECT) VIT Chennai
Sponsored by
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research(CSIR)
Seminar Theme
The demand for electrical power is expected to increase three fold in another decade. So apart from planning and installing additional power generation plants, there is an urgent need for the development of sustainable renewable energy sources and to reduce the environmental pollution. Renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies are keys to create a clean energy future for not only the nation,
but also for the entire world. Also, to save the earth from global warming, exploring the ways of harnessing pollution free resources are essential.Fuel cells have emerged as a promising alternative source of clean energy for applications ranging from automotive industry to residential and commercial installations. The application of fuel cell technologies to advanced power generation systems portends the most significant advancement in energy efficiency, conservation, and environmental protection for the next decade. This has created a need for a class of specialized power converters geared to interface between the fuel cell device and the end user appliance. The output power in a fuel cell is controlled
and conditioned by a high power DC-DC converter, to match the electric characteristic of the dc–dc converter with that of the fuel cell. Several researches is currently undertaken to aid the development of efficient, robust and cheaper fuel cells and associated system components. The seminar will provide a platform to an in-depth discussion on the application of fuel cell technology to grid connected systems, which will benefit participants from academic and R & D institutions, professional engineers from utilities, industries and policy makers. The seminar will focus on the research challenges emerging out with fuel cells and the application of power electronic converters for fuel cells.

About SELECT
The School of Electrical Engineering at VIT Chennai was established for imparting a state-of the- art education, training and research in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and allied areas. It offers B.Tech. and Ph.D. / M.S. (Research) Programmes in the domain of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The expertise of the faculty members includes Power Systems, Power Electronics and Drives, Applied Electronics, Control and Instrumentation, VLSI and all frontier areas.
The increasing power demand has led to the growth of new technologies that play an integral role in shaping the future energy market. Reliable integration of distributed energy resources into micro grids and large power grids has recently gained considerable attention. The opportunity to combine different energy sources, such as combined heat and power (CHP) generators, solar cells, wind turbines, batteries, and even supercaps, is the first step to a successful alternative energy source for building power. Micro-grid management networks are designed to synchronize multiple energy sources with the Grid, and with building loads. Special protection, control and energy management systems must be designed for the micro grid operation in order to ensure reliable, secure and economical operation in either grid connected or stand-alone mode. Tying building loads to the micro-grid is a separate challenge, one that can double the effectiveness of micro-grids during peak energy usage periods. Micro-grids are an effective method for distributing power within and between buildings. Adding building demand control significantly improves the effectiveness of a micro-grid working within the larger Grid service.Coordinating energy sources and loads offers the best opportunity for leveraging limited resources. The course is a one day programme which intends to be an eye opener for researchers as well as students who would like to work in the area of energy management systems in micro grids.
- Introduction to energy management in micro grids
- Energy management and operational planning of micro grids
- Issues in planning an autonomous micro grid
- Distributed generation planning
- Autonomous control of micro grids
