(6-9 MAY 2013)
Discipline of Mechanical Engineering
INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY INDORE

INTRODUCTION:
Automotive industry is going through a transition where design of new vehicles is dictated by cost, fuel efficiency and safety. Rising petroleum fuel price and stringent emission norms demand continuous improvement in fuel saving technologies. At the same time, high power vehicles with increased vehicle speed require precise vehicle control and the highest safety. These requirements along with a need to lower the production cost have given way to develop and use advanced technologies in engine and vehicle control. The Common Rail Diesel Injection, GDI, PFI systems are some of the few technologies which have decreased the fuel consumption and engine emissions and improved engine response. This has been achieved thorough more sensors and computer controls through ECU. In last decade, mechatronics has revolutionized the way engine and vehicle is governed and safety is achieved in modern automobiles. For continuous improvement in engine efficiency, vehicle handling, comfort and safety, professionals working in automotive engineering need to be trained in advanced technologies.

A SHORT TERM COURSE ON MECHATRONICS AND ROBOTICS

A SHORT TERM COURSE ON
MECHATRONICS
AND
ROBOTICS
15th to 19th July 2013
Course Objectives
Mechatronics integrates mechanical, electrical and software engineering in the design, development and control of diverse systems used on a range of industries including manufacturing, medicine and the service industries. Examples of Mechatronics system include aircrafts, dishwashers, motor vehicles, automated manufacturing plants, medical and surgical devices and systems, robots of all types, many toys, artificial organs and many others. Mechatronics engineers are therefore involved in almost every possible industry at levels from applications development to manufacturing to advanced research. However, as far as this country is concerned, the concept of Mechatronics and Robotics is still largely associated with imported technologies. The import of technology perhaps is a good one-time solution to create the domestic market, but in order to enjoy the fruits of technology perpetually; one must develop in-house manufacturing and R&D establishments. A prerequisite for achieving this target is the availability of quality manpower in adequate number. It may be noted that the existing trained manpower in this sector in India is scanty. Herein lies the importance of launching Human Resource Development programs in the areas of Mechatronics and Robotics. The objective of the proposed course is to introduce the state-of-art technology and products in Mechatronics and Robotics to practicing Engineers and learning Researchers to enable them to take up challenging assignment in future and spread the learning to the peers and creating professional environment. Background theory of product and technology in Mechatronics and Robotics as well as practical hands on shall be introduced and deliberates upon during the programme. The course will be interdisciplinary in the nature and the participants will be given necessary inputs in all areas, starting from fundamentals and then in the simulation and ending in real hardware. The course envisage enhancement of knowledge and confidence of the participants to become leaders of Mechatronics and Robotic Design teams and carry out successful project in their perspective fields.
