National workshop on Wavelets, Multiresolution and Multifractal Analyses in Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences -Current Trends (WMMFA2012), At Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbay

Introduction

The subject of wavelet and fractal analyses is fast developing and has drawn a great deal of attention of scientists in varied disciplines of science and engineering. The wavelet transformation is a localized transformation of signals in space-time and time-frequency domains. This property can be effectively utilized to extract information from signals that is not possible with the conventional signal processing tools. Over the past decade, wavelets, multiresolution and multifractal analyses have been formalized into a thorough mathematical framework and have found a variety of applications with significant impact in the analyses of several geophysical processes such as geomagnetism, atmospheric turbulence, space-time rainfall, ocean wind waves, fluid dynamics, seafloor bathymetry, well-logging and climate change studies among others. It is likely that there will be a variety of applications of wavelets and fractals in geophysics in the years to come.

National Workshop on Use and Deployment of Web and Video Courses for Enriching Engineering Education, At Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, Assam

About NPTEL

National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is a Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) initiative to promote quality engineering education in the country through video and web based learning material. The seven Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore had been entrusted to produce web-based and video-based courses in 5 disciplines of Engineering (Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics & Communication/ Computer Science and Engineering) as well as in Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management areas. A total of 125 web-based and 135 video-based courses have been produced in these disciplines in the first phase of the project. These courses are being used as supplementary material, and also for training teachers in any institution.

The NPTEL courses are accessible through the NPTEL Website: http://nptel.iitm.ac.in The development of courses under second phase of NPTEL is in progress. There are about 500 web based and 516 video based courses in this phase. A total of 1016 courses are being proposed in the second phase of NPTEL.

Successful deployment and use of this considerable volume of course material, however, would depend largely on the acceptance and use of the same by user institutions. To create awareness regarding use of these courses by all institutions, a number of national workshops have been planned.
