Voice over IP

Abstract

Voice over IP is related to two technologies. One is internet telephony and second is telephony over internet. Internet telephony is a term used primarily to refer to the use of software in conjunction with a sound card and microphone to call over internet. However, it normally relies on the use of communicating via packet data network such as IP, ATM has become a preferred strategy for network planners. Today, data networks have progressed to the [point that is now possible to support voice and multimedia application right over the internet and more and more companies are seeing the value of transporting voice over IP network to reduce costs and to set the stage for advanced multimedia application.
Support for voice communication using the internet protocol (IP), which is usually just called “voice over IP” or VoIP, has become especially attractive given the low-cost, flat-rate pricing of the public internet. In fact, toll quality telephony mver IP has now become one of the key steps leading to the convergence of the voice, video, and data communication industries. The feasibility of carrying voice and call signaling messages over the internet has already been demonstrated but delivering high quality commercial products, establishing public services, and convincing users to buy into the vision are just beginning.
