ABSTRACT
Diamond is the hardest known material to man and diamond coatings are emerging as a latest technique in the field of cutting tools, optics, defense and medical. Realizing this various new techniques of diamond deposition are being developed. The paper tabulates different properties of diamond and dependent applications.
The central focus of the article is on adhesion of diamond coatings on cutting tools. Mechanism of diamond growth and factors affecting adhesion of diamond has been briefly discussed.
Composite electroplating and Flame Assisted CVD have been studied as methods to improve adhesion of diamond films in respect of substrate material, pretreatment of substrate and experimental set-up.
The paper also describes Abrasion Wear Test and Indentation Test employed for testing the diamond films. The article concludes with results of Abrasion Wear Test, Indentation Test and Discussion.
