Geometric Design Using Point Clouds
Abstract
In several situations, the process of engineering design starts with the usage of clay models or concept models. Such models can be scanned and a point cloud data can be generated. The point cloud offers a new basis of information for carrying out different tasks of engineering design. It can be used for geometric design of curves and surfaces of a part. One can also use the point cloud for mesh generation, CNC tool path generation, feature-based design, first article inspection, feature segmentation, evaluation of wear-volume and for flat-pattern generation. The seminar provides an overview of scanning techniques as well as design case studies of this approach.
Two specific research issues of point cloud processing will be discussed in the seminar. The first one deals of the use of neural networks for extracting the information of control points of a surface from its point cloud representation. The second issue focuses on the development of a grammar for feature-based design of saddle trees using point cloud information. This approach can be extended to a variety of other applications.
