Behaviour of Fixed-Ended Thin-Walled Steel Channel Columns with Complex Stiffeners

Behaviour of Fixed-Ended Thin-Walled Steel Channel Columns with Complex Stiffeners

Abstract

This project presents an experimental and numerical investigations of fixed-ended cold-formed steel channel columns with complex stiffeners. The complex stiffeners of the sections consist of simple lips with return lips. The test strengths of the columns were compared with the unfactored design column strengths predicted by the American and Australian/New Zealand specifications for cold-formed steel structures. Finite element analyses were performed using finite element program ABAQUS. A non-linear finite element model was developed and verified against the experimental results. The calibrated model was used for a parametric study of cross-sections geometry. The experimental and numerical results were also compared with the design results predicted by the direct strength method. It is shown that the existing direct strength method is generally quite conservative. The existing direct strength method was then recalibrated for fixed-ended cold-formed steel channel columns with complex stiffeners based on the data obtained from the experimental and numerical investigations in this project.
