FACTS and Custom Power Controllers for Quality Enhancement of Deregulated Power Systems
INTRODUCTION
The deregulation of electric power utility brings with it
new challenges and opportunities since the previous
centrally designed and operated systems are replaced by
a new competitive framework. In the rapidly deregulating
environment, reactive power control to assure voltage
stability and power flow control to avoid line overloading
and congestion require special consideration in power
system operation. Hence the current trend of deregulation
of electricity market favours the FACTS and custom
power controllers in many ways. These devices in the
deregulated environment allow the system to be used in
more flexible way with increased stability margins and
enhanced power quality.
The course is intended to give an exposure to these recent
trends, which would be useful for teachers from
engineering colleges, engineers from power utilities and
also the research organizations.
