BIOREMEDIATION: Nature’s Way to a Cleaner Environment
ABSTRACT
In this paper we intend to discuss a promising alternative to conventional cleanup technologies named ‘BIOREMEDIATION’ for both ground water and soil because it may be safer, faster and less costly. “Remediate” means to solve a problem, and “bio-remediate” means to use biological organisms to solve an environmental problem such as contaminated soil and ground water. This paper centers around the principles of bioremediation, bioremediation verses other technologies, its current practice and its future prospects. This paper also emphasizes on the in-situ bioremediation processes. We have observed that despite the rapid growth in the use of this technology, bioremediation is not universally understood or trusted by those who must approve its use, and its success is a hotly debated issue. Bioremediation in future can be the most exciting technology if it overcomes the lack of knowledge of the fields of environmental engineering, hydrology and the complex working of the microorganisms.
