CONTROL OF CO EMISSIONS FROM PETROL ENGINE WITH A CATALYTIC CONVERTER

CONTROL OF CO EMISSIONS FROM PETROL ENGINE WITH A CATALYTIC CONVERTER

ABSTRACT

Today, motor vehicle pollution is the cause of great concern to the people around the world. Automobile manufacturers, in different countries, are trying to find new solutions for this problem. The principal pollutants are CO, Unburned HC, and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). This report studies the control of emission of one of the chief culprit compound, CO that is responsible for intoxication of the air. In this report, a catalytic converter with sponge iron and then with manganese ore as catalyst is used to reduce the CO emission from high-speed four-stroke variable compression ratio petrol engine. The influence of void ratio and preheated air is analyzed and finally, a comparison is made between sponge iron and manganese ore with regard to their performance as better catalyst.
