Introduction and Objectives

The global warming and climate change agenda in the world is looking for green energy alternatives hich can reduce greenhouse gases emission. In this scenario, biogas has merged environment friendly energy source which not only provide clean fuel but alsoe reduce the problem of waste disposal. Recent life cycle assessment studies have demonstrated that biogas derived biomethane is one of the energy efficient and envronmentally sustainable fuel. Not only that, biogas plant spent slurry is very good manure for crop production and has remarkable role in promoting sustainable biomass production system in the world. Biogas is an environment friendly, clean, cheap and versatile fuel. Biogas is produced by anaerobic digestion of organic wastes such as cattle dung, vegetable wastes, sheep and poultry droppings, municipal solid waste, sewage water, industrial organic effluent, land fill etc. Presently biogas is mainly used for cooking and lighting purposes in the rural areas in some developing countries and for powe and heat production in Europe. However, its utilization as an automobile fuel is possible by purifying and then compressing it in insrue. cylder at high pessr

In this context, an “International Training Programme on Biogas Production, Purification and Power Generation for Commercial Technology Packages” is being organ
i
zed at IIT Delhi during 2529 October,
2010 with the following objectives:
๔€‚™ Disseminating
new knowledge and technology developed through research in the field of biogas production, purification and power generation.
๔€‚™ To make entrepreneurs aware about opportunitiedeveloping countries.
๔€‚™Exposure of working biogas technologies in the field. The specific target groups of this training programme are entrepreneurs/consultancy companies /scientists/academics/field workers/dealing with CNG as automobile fuel etc. involved in biogas activities. The participants should have basic academic background to understand the content of the course.

research activities. It is fully residential campus for all faculty and staff members. Biogas Development and Training Centre started in IIT Delhi in 2008 and engaged in research and development of biogas relatedtechnologies. IIT Delhi has successfully developed biogas enrichment and bottling technology for vehicular applications. Biogas Development and Training Centers (BDTCs) are supported by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, for providing technical training and publicity support for quality implementation of biogas programme. It provides technical support, coordinate R&D and consultancy work on biogas technology with expertise available in IIT Delhi. BDTC IIT Delhi is working on various technologies related to biogas production and purification.

About MNRE

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is the nodal Ministry of the Government of India for all matters relating to new and renewable energy. The broad aim of the Ministry is to develop and deploy new and renewable energy for supplementing
the energy requirements of the country. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has launched a new initiative for the development of commercial projects on biogas basedenergy system as “Demonstration of ‘Integrated Technology‐ Package onMedium‐size Biogas‐Fertilizer Plants (BGFP) for Generation, Purification/ Enrichment, Bottling and Piped distribution of Biogas towards harnessing ‘Near Total Potential of suitable Biomass in Rural Areas’.

Course Contents and Programme Schedule

This would be a 5 days course in which lectures will be delivered on various aspects o biogas technology i.e. biogas production technology, biogas analysis, biogas purification and upgradation practical techniques, compression, biogas engines and duel fuel engines for power generation, marketing and entrepreneurship. Participants will get an exposure to the requirements of the project formulation and implementation of the project, maintaining supply chain of raw materials, monitoring and project financing mechanisms etc. Besides this, a field visit will be organized for demonstration of working systems. The date for the program is 2529 October,
2010. Participants will also take part in the one day special session on “Biomethanation, Upscaling, Challenges and Opportunities” being planned under the aegis of Delhi International Renewable Energy Conference DIREC (a Ministerial Level Mega Conference and Exhibition) on 27th October, 2010.
