MONITORING OF SLOPE MOVEMENTS AND PREVENTION OF LANDSLIDES
ABSTRACT
Landslides are a type of natural disaster that occurs mostly in the hilly regions. In order to monitor the slope movement and possible detection and mitigation of landslides, this paper focuses on two important aspects.
They are:
1) Monitoring of the hilly regions carefully and accurately where landslides can occur. We propose a system involving remote sensing and geographic information systems, which will automatically monitor the various factors contributing to landslides, analyze them and inform the professionals about the developments in those places. This will use computer systems, supporting softwares, and sound mathematical analysis with probability functions. Based on it proper Civil Engineering measures can be taken to prevent landslides.
2) Secondly this paper proposes an early warning system that can be established in the hilly regions at places of importance like National Highways, railway lines, towns and cities which will give warning to the people when landslides occur suddenly even after taking all the preventive measures. Another idea is the integration of mechanical systems with the early warning systems that will automatically close roads when landslides occur or give warning to the vehicles moving on the roads to stay away from the regions.
