ABSTRACT:

Increase in industrialization, growing energy demands and rapid depletion of petroleum fuels and their ever-increasing costs have led to an intensive search for alternative fuels. The substitutes for petroleum fuels are the alcohols and some other fuels such as LNG, RFG, CNG, syngas, biodiesel,etc and among all these alternative fuels the most promising alternative are alcohols-mainly methanol & ethanol. Methanol or methyl alcohol can be produced from coal, a relatively abundant fossil fuel. Methods of fuel production, Fuel properties, performance of engines & exhaust emission characteristics, of methanol has been presented here and compared with the other alternatives and concluded as the best.

INTRODUCTION:

The rapid depletion of petroleum fuels and their ever increasing costs have led to an intensive search for alternative fuels. In order to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels ,scientists have been working extremely on alternative fuels, and the most promising substitutes for petroleum fuels are the alcohols. apart from these some of the commonly alternative fuels are:LNG,PROPANE,RFG(reformulatedgosoline),SYNGAS,BIODIESEL,BIOGAS,CNG,HYDROGEN.

Alcohols were used in vehicles in the early part of this century, but low cost gasoline nearly forced them off the market. Racing cars have always preferred &continue to prefer methanol as a fuel because of the increased power obtainable over gasoline.
