JABBER ARCHITECTURE TECHNOLOGY AND PROTOCOL

JABBER ARCHITECTURE TECHNOLOGY AND PROTOCOL

INTRODUCTION:

What is Jabber ?:

• XML-based
• Open-source
• Client-server Architecture
• Interoperable
•System and protocol
•For presence and messaging

The first application of the Jabber protocols is an instant messaging (IM) system similar to AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, MSN Instant Messenger, or Yahoo! Messenger. A great deal of software has been written in compliance with the Jabber protocols, including several servers, a wide variety of IM clients for just about every platform . The Jabber protocols are now managed by the Jabber Software Foundation.

What is the history of Jabber?:

Jabber was started by Jeremie Miller in early 1998, when he started developing the ‘jabberd’’server. The first public recognition of the project appeared at Slashdot on 1999-01-04. The Jabber protocols developed in tandem with the jabberd server and the early clients such as Winjab and Gabber. The jabberd server reached version 1.0 in May 2000, version 1.2 in October 2000, and version 1.4 in February 2002. The protocols themselves reached steady-state with jabberd 1.0, although several key protocol enhancements were added with versions 1.2 and 1.4. In August 2001, the Jabber Software Foundation was organized to manage and extend the protocols.
