THE MIRACLES OF NANOTECHNOLOGY
ABSTRACT:
Imagine a technology so powerful that it will allow such feats as desktop manufacturing, cellular repair, artificial intelligence, inexpensive space travel, clear and abundant energy and environmental restoration; a technology so powerful that every one can reap its benefits a technology so fundamental that it will radically change our economic and political systems; a technology so imminent that most of us will see its impact within our life times. Such is the prominence of nanotechnology.
This paper reviews about the electronic computers that contain components with dimensions of only few nanometers. A nanometer, one billionth of meter is only about 10 atomic diameters. Such nanometer scale electronic computers that are electronic nano computers that contain molecular scale components are likely to be built up 10000 times more densely integrated than today's smallest microcomputers.
It describes achievements, challenges, disadvantages of nanotechnology and status of new technologies and designs that promise to continue the miniaturization of electronic computers down to a scale of tens of nanometer and, ultimately to the molecular scale.
INTRODUCTION:
Electronics is fuelled by miniaturization, working smaller has led to tools capable of manipulating individual atoms, just as protein in a potato manipulate the atoms of soil, air and water to make copies of themselves. The shotgun marriage of chemistry and engineering, called nanotechnology, is ushering in the era of self-replicating machinery and self-assembling goods made from cheap raw atoms.
Nanotechnology is molecular manufacturing or more simply, building things one atom or molecule at a time with programmed nanoscopic robot atoms. A nanometer is one billionth of meter (3 to 4 times wide). The trick of nanotechnology is to manipulate atoms individually and place them exactly where needed to produce the desired structure.
Imagine being able to cure cancer by drinking a medicine stirred in to your favorite fruit juice. Imagine a super computer no bigger than a human cell. Imagine a four person, surface to orbit spacecraft no larger or more expensive than a family car. These are just few products expected from nanotechnology.
Humanity will be faced with a powerful accelerated social revolution as a result of nanotechnology. In the near future a team of scientists will succeed in constructing the first nanosize robot capable of self-replication. With in a few short years consumer goods will become plentiful, inexpensive, smart and durable medicine will take a quantum leap forward. The world is on the brink of a new technology revolution beyond any human experience. No longer will progress need to be cut or smoke spew in to the air. At the last turn of the century, the average person would have had a hard time trying to understand how cars and airplanes worked. . By the next turn of the century, scientists said that the 21st century could see many science fiction dreams come thanks to molecular nanotechnology. Nanotechnology will be anywhere from five to 15 years in the future; although we still don’t see dramatic changes in our world right away. This is the promise of nanotechnology
