A NEW SOLUTION TO LOW PRESSURE STEAM THERMOCOMPRESSOR SYSTEMS - BOOSTING STEAM TO BOOST PROFITS

ABSTRACT:

In the present global scenario the cost of producing the energy by the means of steam has been raising due to increase in the prices of the fuels and other energy sources required for steam production. In the recent times there has been severe shortage of this fuels. Due to this reason most of the modern Industries and power plants are trying to take effective steps for maximum utilization of the steam produced to reduce the costs involved in it. Most of the industries vent low-pressure steam to atmosphere. Use of this steam would result in tremendous saving to the company in terms of fuel-cost, water &its treatment costs. Hence this paper focuses on effective utilization of steam by using a Thermo-compressor.

INTRODUCTION:

The low-pressure steam generated in the industries is generally used

1) To heat feed water.
2) As a feed water after condensation
3) To heat air

The main limitations in using the low pressure for the above said purposes are:

(i) Condensation of steam in the pipeline due to the distance between the source of low-pressure steam and boiler feed water tank being large.
(ii) Low temperature of steam results in poor LMTD in the heat exchanger. Hence inefficient heat exchange in the heat exchanger.
(iii) Condensation of low pressure steam has a cost - cooling water, cooling towers, pumps - running cost as well as maintenance cost.
A new solution for effective utilization of low pressure is “Thermo compressor systems”

WHAT IS A THERMO COMPRESSOR?

Thermo compressor is equipment that boosts low-pressure steam to a higher pressure. There are three main components in it. They are:

a) The motive nozzle
b) The suction chamber
c) Diffuser

Thermo compressors require input energy in the form of high-pressure steam (motive steam). Pressure head of motive steam is converted to velocity head by nozzle. Low-pressure steam (suction steam) is entrained by this high velocity. The velocity head of mixture (discharge steam) is reconverted to pressure head by diffuser.
