POWDER METALLURGY

POWDER METALLURGY

INTRODUCTION:

Powder metallurgy (P/M) is a branch of metallurgy which deals with the production of metal and non-metal powders and manufacture of components by using those powders.

It is based on the fact that when the metallic powders are subjected to a sufficient high pressure, a degree of bonding taken place between the particles and a coherent mass is produced. Heating the coherent mass improves the coherence between particles by promoting intergranular grain growth and diffusion. The component has unique and wide range of properties which satisfy the needs of modern society in a day to day life.

PRINCIPAL STAGES IN P/M PROCESS:

The principal stages in a P/M process are as follows:-

1. Production of metal powder of suitable degree of fineness and purity.
2. Blending or mixing
3. Compaction of the metal powder by subjecting it to a sufficient pressure in a suitable die.
4. Sintering of the compacted mass at a temp high enough to cause diffusion and intergranular grain growth.
5. Finishing sizing and inspecting the product
