ADVANCES IN AUTOMOBILE ENGG.

ADVANCES IN AUTOMOBILE ENGG.

ABSTRACT:

An ideal automotive power source is compact, produces power smoothly, is easy to mount in the vehicle and has a low manufacturing cost. It is a fuel efficient, quiet, light weight, lasts forever with less maintenance. It also must be low in exhaust emissions and readily recyclable.

This paper highlights about Wankel Rotary Engine which is very near to the ideal one.

The rotary engine was first invented in 1957 by German scientist Dr.Felix Wankel. But there were several problems in practical designing of it. In 1959 ,completion of first rotary engine was done successfully. In 1963, mass production of rotary started by MAZDA,Japan.

In a piston engine, expansion pressure created by burning of the fuel-air mixture forces pistons to move back and forth inside of cylinders. Connecting rods and a crankshaft then convert this linear movement into rotational motion required to drive the car.

In a rotary engine there is no linear motion to convert. Pressure is contained in chambers created by different areas of the housing and convex faces of a triangular rotor. As combustion occurs the rotor is immediately made to turn thus reducing vibration and increasing engine revs. The resultant increase in efficiency also means that the engine can be much smaller for equivalent performance of a traditional piston engine.

The Wankel engine is particularly well suited to the use of hydrogen fuel, since its design minimizes most of the combustion difficulties.
