DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMP USING CFD [COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS]
Introduction:
It is said that the first industrial revolution was experienced in 18th century when attempts were made to substitute muscle power by mechanical energy. The world is now passing through 2nd industrial revolution with fantastic advances in computers, electronics and computer substituting human brain.
In today’s date the concept of design and analysis is getting a new look, new definition and meaning. Traditional design methods are being replaced by CAD /CAE system. Traditional methods have some limitations, errors and consume long time. CAD /CAE system are giving new look to the design and analysis procedure.
In today’s fast changing world where many number of products are being launched daily, testing of product for durability and reliability before launching them into market is of key importance for manufacturers.
The method of prototype testing has been now in use for long time. There is high cost involved in making prototype, also if design changes, changes in prototype have to be done which is also time consuming.
It is here that CAD /CAE systems come to our aid. CAD helps to build the prototype or model through CAD softwares. The model is stored in memory of computer. CAD helps in quick design of model with less time, efforts, greater accuracy .it also helps in good visualization and understanding of the model or prototype .now these model can be taken to CAE system for simulation. In simulation the model is subjected to real conditions that the actual prototype will have in real world. The results obtained through this gives us a close look to behavior of model and visualization of model under the real conditions.
The benefit of verifying design with computers is speed, less cost, flexibility and accuracy of design. Also CAE offers better representation of real world conditions and performans, those to which physical model is subjected.
The objective of this project is “Design and Analysis of centrifugal pump using CFD” through which a sincere effort is made to learn and implement the new concept of design and analysis. The aim behind attempting such project is to learn the CAD / CAE systems, design and analysis procedures which are adopted in today’s date in industries.
In this project mechanical design of impeller and casing of centrifugal pump is done. The solid modeling of impeller and casing is done in CATIA-V5R11 software. After this the model is imported in GAMBIT software in which meshing is done. And simulation is performed in FLUENT 6.1 CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) package.
The results obtained from simulation are compared with the theoretical values, which are nearly same. The C-program of design is done to get required dimensions and parameters related to centrifugal pump.
Thus the project is conducted successfully with the help of CAD / CAE softwares.
