DEVELOPMENTS IN GRINDING TECHNOLOGY

DEVELOPMENTS IN GRINDING TECHNOLOGY

ABSTRACT:

Engineering products are generally manufactured by performing followed by finishing by machining and grinding to appropriate dimensions and surface quality for desired performance and long service life. Grinding technology has made such a long stride in last few years in respect of both MRR and finish that machining requirement is drastically reduced and even eliminated in some cases. The recent developments in grinding processes, wheels, systems and control enabled remarkable improvements in productivity, quality economy and environment friendliness. This paper briefly presents the basic problems associated with grinding particularly in high production and precision grinding, grinding exotic or difficult to grind materials and when control or prevention of environmental pollution is a great concern. Various techniques developed and used for overcoming those problems have been highlighted. The main source of problem in grinding is the high grinding zone temperature, which not only reduces the performance and life of the grinding wheels but also impairs the product quality by dimensional distortion and induction of tensile residual stresses and micro cracks. Application of conventional cutting fluids in grinding is not only ineffective but also causes severe environmental problems and health hazards. The beneficial roles of application of cryogenic cooling on both grind ability and environments have been presented in this paper. The excellent performance and future potentially of the unique mono layered super abrasive wheels recently developed by special brazing have also been reported here. Some recent observations on grind ability of Ti-6Al-4V alloy also included.
