KAIZEN – A JAPANESE TECHNOLOGY

KAIZEN – A JAPANESE TECHNOLOGY

INTRODUCTION:

Productivity is progressively assuming increasing importance in business and industry. At end of macro level, economist and strategic perceives it is as key determinant of the standard of living in a country. At micro level, business executives see it as the means for improving profit, gaining market leadership introducing cost, while employees see it as means for enlarging their earning. The expectation of many group and individual to be appearing to be involved with improvement of productivity, depending on which resources, it considers to be of overriding importance. The management, considering itself as the guardian of capital, may tend to capital maximize the productivity of capital. The worker an their unions, on other hand, may be more interested in improving the productivity of there efforts in terms of earning per unit of labor. Such differences in perception and objective often result in a paradoxical situation of various working groups working to enhance productivity and yet working against each other. A crisis sets in, which we would be referred to as the productivity crises.

The problem becomes more acte in a developing country like India, where capital is sources. Productivity of this scares recourses can be increased by adopting process, which require less capital. However, such process often requires more labor productivity. This results in an impoverished ability to pay the workers well. The standard of living fails to improve. Ultimately, dissatisfaction creeps in, resulting in wide spread unrest and other undesirable consequents. Spending scarce capital to increase labor productivity, on other hand, reduce the productivity of scarce resources, capital, which in tern lowers the ability of organization to generate profits. The organization is again unable to pay well, which result in stagnation in standard of living of the labor, and leads to dissatisfaction and unrest. This forces a whole country or society to continue to be in a state of confusion both economy and socially.

Therefore it was felt necessary to look for alternative ways of increasing productivity in organization, such that it could be gradually extended to a large framework. Since it appears that the differences in perception of productivity lie at the

route of the productivity crisis, it was felt that an appropriate appreciation of productivity might facilitate an alignment in perception. This provided the motivation for undertaking a research study with expectation of identifying implementing and analyzing and appropriate management practice, which can draw a company, hopefully, out of the possible productivity crisis. The following results were aimed for from this research

1. Finding the key process, which could bring and alignment in the search for productivity by major stack holder and different pressure group
2. Understanding the key process to the extended possible so that it could be appropriately fitted in to different framework.
3. Development desirable and robust condition for this process, which to a large extent, would help achieve organizational productivity improvement in changing operating environments.
4. Modelling the process to facilitate effective decision-making, and simulating it to understand various dynamics of the process under different conditions.
5. Generalizing the process so that it could be applied in different companies, with minimum effort for customizing.
