The temperature change wheel
ABSTRACT:
The Wally Minto invented a practical version of an engine/generator that runs on solar energy, which is popularly known as Wally Minto’s wonder wheel. The temperature difference created using solar energy is used to create the torque in the wheel by simple gravity principle. Thus it is known as temperature change wheel. At 1 rpm we can produce 3.19 horsepower by using propane as working liquid, and 8.69 horsepower if Freon R-12 is used instead of propane. As long as we can maintain a temperature difference between the top and bottom of the wheel we get the power continuously.
We can use this steady 24-hour-a-day source of eight horsepower to drive grain mills, shop equipment, composting cutter-chippers, water pumps and electrical generators… not all at once, to be sure, but one or two or three at a time. We have to step that 1 rpm up through pulleys and/or a gearbox to the kinds of speeds that today's appliances and tools need for their proper operation.
This paper includes construction, working, basic considerations in designs of wheel, power take off, working liquids and their thermodynamic properties, basic calculations of heat transfer and conclusion.
