College of Engineering (COEP), Pune and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Thiruvananthapuram, are jointly organising an International Clinical Engineering Workshop (ICEW-India, 2011) in February, 2011 (20th to 25th) in Pune. This is the second of the series of Workshops launched in Thiruvananthapuram in October 2009 with the first Indo-US Advanced Clinical Engineering Workshop (ACEW-India, 2009) .

The main aim of ICEW-India, 2011 will be to highlight the urgent need for establishing a strong Clinical Engineering Profession in India . This Workshop will serve as a common platform for experts and professionals to discuss important challenges faced by the CE profession and identify possible ways to move forward . This Workshop will also include training modules, which will enable Clinical Engineers (CEs) working in hospitals to learn about modern methods in Clinical Engineering Practice and thus, upgrade their knowledge and skills, and build competences in essential areas. In addition to CEs, participation from hospital administrators/managers, clinicians, academic and teaching faculty, students, NGO representatives and industry personnel is also encouraged to help bring in multiple viewpoints.

One of the best medical teaching institutions of the country, the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, and three leading members of the rapidly growing healthcare sector of the country, Fortis Healthcare Ltd, Max Healthcare Institute, and Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre, Pune, are supporting this Workshop as Academic Partners .

In view of limited number of available seats and also to give representation to participants from all the professions, we have requested pre-registration through the workshop’s website (http://www.icew-india.in/registration.htm) before December 20th, 2010. BACKGROUND

The use of advanced technology is an essential requirement of the modern medical practice and presence of well trained Clinical Engineers as integral members of the clinical and managerial team is needed to ensure safe, effective and optimal use of healthcare technology. Therefore, development of a strong Clinical Engineering Profession becomes a top priority for any country which intends to provide high quality and safe healthcare to its citizens.

Keeping this requirement in mind, a series of Workshops with a strong focus on the needs of Clinical Engineering Profession in India was launched in October 2009. The first Workshop in this series was the Advanced Clinical Engineering Workshop (ACEW-India, 2009), organised in Thiruvananthapuram by Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) in collaboration with American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE). This initiative was funded by IUSSTF and WHO and was endorsed by leading international and national healthcare organisations such as IFMBE, QCI, NABH and ACASH. The Workshop had a very good response from the participants, the majority being Clinical Engineers from different parts of the country.

We are pleased to announce the second Workshop of this series, the International Clinical Engineering Workshop – India, 2011 (ICEW-India, 2011) to be organised between 20th and 25th of February, 2011 in College of Engineering, Pune.
