INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCES IN POLYMER SCIENCE AND RUBBER TECHNOLOGY (APSRT) CHALLENGES TOWARDS 2020 AND BEYOND At INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, KHARAGPUR
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The real journey of macromolecules started in 1920s when Hermann Staudinger introduced the revolutionary concept of 'Macromolecules'. The foundation stone of rubber technology was laid, when Charles Goodyear first started and patented the vulcanization of natural rubber in 1839. There have been tremendous advances in science and technology of polymer
and rubber since last few decades. Apart from their conventional application in the field of construction, automobiles, engineering and defence, polymers and rubbers are now being used in critical applications like in aerospace, microelectronics, medical and biomedicals. The continuous development in polymer based advanced materials for self healing, shape memory, microelectronics etc are expected to change the quality of human life in future. Due
to globalization as well as recent economic recession there are interesting developments in polymer and rubber industries. Different industries and research institutions have been urged to develop new polymers and polymeric materials and to explore new innovative technology for production of quality products. This International Conference will delineate
recent developments in the science and technology of polymers and rubbers. It will also focus on the future trends in the field of polymer and rubber science towards the next decade which will bring the completion of almost a century since the concept of “Macromolecules” put forward by Staudinger. This conference will include plenary lectures, invited lectures, special lectures by experts from academia and industries. Young scientists are also encouraged to give oral and poster
presentation.
Rubber Technology Centre
Rubber Technology Centre (RTC) is a unique Centre, the first of its kind in our country. The first Rubber Technology Laboratory in our country for the purpose of teaching and research was established in 1955 in the Department of Applied Chemistry in IIT, Kharagpur under the collaborative program with the British Government (the Colombo Plan), the USA Government (Technical Collaboration Mission) and Ministry of Education, Government of India. The independent Rubber
Technology Centre was established in 1981. The Centre acquired advanced processing, testing and characterization equipment from Indo-British, Indo-French Collaborative Programs and also a large number of research projects from CSIR, DST, DAE, ISRO, ARDB, DRDO, DBT, RDSO. During last three decades since its inception this Centre has done pioneering work in research and education in rubber and polymer science and technology. The Centre has many research projects funded by different Government funded agencies, industries (in India and abroad) and importantly by National &
International collaborative / exchange research program. The Centre is now well-equipped with different modern analytical instruments required for the basic and applied research in rubber and polymer science and technology. The state of the art research program of the Centre is focused on the development of new products, novel processing technology, polymer blend & alloys in developing advanced materials like nanocomposites, novel block and graft
copolymers, thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), smart materials, thermoreversible self-healing materials, EMI shielding materials.
