INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON ADVANCES IN ASBESTOS-FREE FRICTION COMPOSITES-III (IWAAFC-III) At INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, DELHI

Background

The development of friction materials for automobile industry is an area which is constantly evolving. The research in this area is being triggered and driven by the present day demands of lightweight vehicles, fuel efficiency and environmental friendly materials. There is an equal pressure on research laboratories as well as industry to produce energy efficient materials that will help in the ultimate aim of developing vehicles that will cause minimal harm to the environment. Asbestos which was an integral part of friction composites is a proven health hazard. As per statistics, approximately 20,000 tonnes of such materials in the form of wear debris are discharged in the environment every year. Consequently, there is a lot more pressure to develop asbestos-free and more efficient friction materials.
Attempts are being made to replace asbestos by a cocktail of fibers and numerous ingredients in friction materials. Interestingly this necessity driven search for replacement has led to a new class of friction composites with far superior properties than the asbestos based ones. The innovations in technology and stringent demands placed by the new era vehicles for better and better performance of friction composites in adverse operating conditions have driven the friction composites Industry to produce the desired amalgam of performance properties by juggling with newer ingredients in right combinations and proportions. During this hit & miss trials, the science behind the functioning of such complex materials has not received significant attention in the Industry. Various issues such as compositional influence, role of in-situ contact dynamics, correlation of squeal & noise with the ingredients and other factors should be addressed properly. The structure-property correlation in this area has always been a challenge to the researchers and practitioners. A better understanding and updating of knowledge regarding the mechanisms and science always form a platform to tailor and develop the future materials in this area.

Workshop

Keeping the above background in mind, a series of biennial workshop was mooted and the inaugural workshop was organized in the year 2006 at IIT Delhi to disseminate the latest information about the Research & Developments in this area. In continuation of the series, third workshop is being organized at Industrial Tribology Machine Dynamics and Maintenance Engineering Center (ITMMEC), I. I. T. Delhi, India on 9th and 10th Feb. (Wednesday & Thursday) 2011 with a focus on the knowledge up gradation and sharing of research experiences and wisdom in this research area by the renowned researchers from all over the world that will directly or indirectly benefit the practitioners in Industry and researchers in alike.
