International Conference Environmental Knowledge for Disaster Risk Management At National Institute of Disaster Management, New Delhi

PREAMBLE

The conference on ‘Environmental Knowledge for Disaster Risk Management (ekDRM)” has been onceptualized for addressing emerging issues and tools/techniques that require focus in order to strengthen the holistic framework of disaster risk management. During the last decade there has been greater focus on the interface between environment, livelihoods and disasters. There is more vigorous conceptual understanding of ecosystem services as evident from initiatives of Joint UNEP-OCHA Environment Unit, UN-ISDR, IUCN, UNFCCC, UNESCO and others international/national organizations in the light of resolutions of Agenda-21, Hyogo Framework, WSSD (Rio+10) and Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. The proposed International Conference on Environmental Knowledge for Disaster Risk Management (ekDRM-2011) jointly supported by NIDM and GIZ, is aimed at understanding the existing framework, assessing strengths and challenges, identifying gaps and developing strategic approaches and tools for environment based DRM interventions. The objectives of the Conference are:

• To emphasize environmental aspects of disaster risk management through use of statistical/decision-support system for assessment, planning and case-studies
• To promote effective networking and training with emerging/innovative methods including e-learning, consultation and workshops in the areas of the project
• To promote effective use of web-enabled system for human resource development and training management in the areas of the project
• To promote international cooperation on exchange of ideas, expertise and sharing of experience on aspects of environment and knowledge management for DRM.

Call for papers

Abstracts (250-300 words) are invited on the thematic areas identified above and may be sent to ekdrm2011@gmail.com on or before 15 March 2011. The guideline for submission of abstracts is available on www.nidm.gov.in/PDF/ekdrm2011.pdf A selection committee will evaluate the abstracts and authors will be intimated on selection of papers by 20 March. Guidelines for full papers will be sent on acceptance of the abstracts. All the manuscripts of the Conference will be published in the form of an edited volume. The selected abstracts will be accessible online on our website.

Registration

Participation is open to policy makers, senior government officials and administrators, scientists, engineers, academicians, NGOs, corporate sector and individuals from various National and International organizations. Interested research scholars can also register for participation.

Registration fee for the Conference is 2000 (INR). Registration fee includes delegate kit, dinner
(day 1), lunch and refreshment during the Conference days. A subsidized fee for research scholars may be considered on request.

Payment shall be made through Demand Draft in favour of “National Institute of Disaster Management” payable at New Delhi. Payment can be made Via Wire transfer as well. Details are given below.

NIDM

National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) was established in 2003 and attained the status of a statutory body under the Disaster Management Act 2005. The mandate of NIDM is capacity building,
training, research, documentation and policy advocacy in all areas of disaster management in India and outside. NIDM has a wide network of state training institutions for effective implementation of training
programmes. NIDM aims to build a national hub to share, learn and create a critical mass of institutions, trainers and trained professionals.

GIZ

GIZ- is based in more than 130 countries and offers demand-driven, tailor-made and effective services for sustainable development. It operates in many fields, including environmental protection, resource conservation and climate change mitigation, and works with its partners at local, regional, national and international level in negotiating solutions in the broader social context. It provides management and logistical services to its partners and advises them to draw up plans and strategies and place integrated experts in order to promote networking and dialogue among international actors.
