Short Term Course on ADVANCES IN EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING At Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
About the Short Course
This two-day short course is intended to edify the theoretical and practical aspects of the recent technological advancements made in earthquake engineering. The speakers will initiate an introduction to the concepts of structural dynamics and earthquake engineering.
Earthquake induced vibrations in structures are controlled using passive, active, semi-active or hybrid devices for response reduction. Passive vibration control technologies such as base isolation, tuned
mass dampers, metallic, liquid, friction, viscous or visco-elastic dampers will be introduced through examples. The analysis and design of structures, such as buildings, bridges, tanks etc. installed with passive vibration control devices will be covered such that the participants will be able to use the available software tools in their practical applications.
Damage detection in strategically important structures using structural health monitoring (SHM) is necessary so that any possible faults can be identified before it leads to catastrophic failures. On the other hand,
determining dynamic properties of an existing structural system is possible through system identification either using ambient or forced vibration data. Changes in the dynamic properties detected through system
identification help in damage assessment. The course will cover both, SHM and system identification useful in earthquake engineering applications along with relevant sensing technologies.
Performance-based seismic design (PBSD) procedure is relatively new and widely recognized as versatile and robust design method in the earthquake engineering community over the world. In this course, the
concept and development of PBSD method and its application in design of new and existing buildings will be covered. In addition, the modeling and analysis techniques related to PBSD will be discussed. A hand-on experience on using standard software for nonlinear analysis of structures will also be provided to participants.
The short course will be of immense interest to the faculty members, research scholars, graduate students, practicing engineers, architects and consultants.

Registration Details
Registration fee is Rs. 9,000/- (Rupees Nine Thousands Only) per participant and should be payable by DD/Cheque (Delhi A/C) in favour of “FITT, IIT Delhi”.
Registration is based on first-come-first serve and limited to 50 eligible applicants.

Accommodation
This is a non-residential programme. The participants are expected to make their own arrangements for stay. Subject to availability, the organizers will try to book accommodation on payment basis within the guest houses of IIT Delhi, if requested sufficiently in advance through the Registration Form.
