ANALYSIS OF TOOL WEAR

ANALYSIS OF TOOL WEAR

ABSTRACT

Metal cutting has been neglected as subject for metallurgical investigation. Concentration on engineering approach to study machining left unanswered question concerning physical and metallurgical changes taking place near cutting edge.

Analysis gives cause of wear of tool which provides some evidence of conditions at the tool edge and factor controlling tool life, machinabality. Tool life under machine shop is shown to be result of no. of different processes and factors that are subjected to diff laws. Flank wear, built up edge and deformation of tool are subjected to high temperature and stress, caterring wear mechanical chipping and thermal cracking all contribute to termination of tool life.

INTRODUCTION

Important factor governing the structure of machine tool are the magnitude and directions of cutting forces. Cutting tools are subjected to an extremely severe rubbing process. They are in metal-to-metal contact between the chip and work piece, under conditions of very high stress at high temperature. The situation is further aggravated (worsened) due to the existence of extreme stress and temperature gradients near the surface of the tool.

During machining, cutting tools remove material from the component to achieve the required shape, dimension and surface roughness (finish). However, wear occurs during the cutting action, and it will ultimately result in the failure of the cutting tool. When the tool wear reaches a certain extent, the tool or active edge has to be replaced to guarantee the desired cutting action.
