ABSTRACT

Necessity is the mother of invention. Our needs are increasing day-by-day. Hence it is necessary to develop more and more new things. This includes invention of new modern materials for comfort. Also, a traditional material needs to be replaced for satisfying our requirements in some specific applications like aerospace, dentistry, automobile, construction etc. Hence we started using the materials manufactured by proper blending of two or more materials. That resulting material is so called as Composite Material or “SMART MATERIALS” having much more superior properties than base material.

In this paper there is an explanation of various types of smart materials on basis of structure. It also includes history and specific applications of smart materials in various fields. There is explanation of advanced smart materials such as FRP, GRP, Kevlar, fiberglass, etc. Case studies in this paper include Advanced Materials used for Dental fillings. Recent advert in dental filling materials include Glass Ionomer Cement and Compomere. This paper gives the mechanism of preparation of glass ionomer cement, its advantages and disadvantages. Compomere yet another composite material used for dental applications is explained in detail.

The contents of this paper also include second case study of Alternative to Steel – FRP. Its use in construction of various structures and its manufacturing. It also explains how FRP can replace the steels used for construction of structures. This paper gives the explanation of benefits and barriers in use of FRP for construction of structures.

INTRODUCTION

Modern living demands materials with excellent properties and the specific requirements are increasing day by day from the modern society. Many a times these demands are not satisfied by conventional processing on materials. Hence we need to go for different combinations of materials to get the desired properties and this is termed as composite material or smart material. Varied requirement of materials to be used in certain applications such as space vehicles, aircraft, rockets, building construction, high pressure vehicles auto mobile applications, etc. can be best satisfied by smart materials, and often, only by them.
