Introduction to CFD and its application in simulation of Aircraft Wing Anti-Icing Operation
ABSTRACT
Development of computational fluid dynamics has now reached a state of maturity, which enables it to stimulate the flow of past practical aircraft configurations. It can thus play a very useful role in aircraft design and development. CFD codes can be used to determine aerodynamic loads on aircraft and thus provide necessary input for the structural design. They can also be used to study and optimize the flow patterns and thus help to design aerodynamically efficient shape.
CFD as whole is a set of computer programs consisting of geometrical data processing, grid generation, solution of governing equations, and the post processing Of solution obtained to get the relevant aerodynamic data/flow visualization.
The main objective this paper is to access how well CFD can predict lift, drag, surface pressure, and the velocity field as a function of the angle of attack for a 2-D airfoil with a glaze or a rime ice shape built upon its leading edge. The focus is on the effects of turbulence modeling on predictions.
INTRODUCTION
The physical aspect of any fluid flow is governed by the following three principals:
1) Mass is conserved;
2) F=ma;
3) Energy is conserved.
These fundamental principles can be expressed in terms of mathematical equation which in their most general form are usually partial differential equation .Computational Fluid dynamics (CFD) is art of replacing the governing partial differential equation of fluid flow with numbers and advancing this number in space and / or time to obtain a complete description of complete flow field of interest.

This is CFD- a computational technology that enables you to study the dynamics of things that flow. Using CFD, you build computational models that represent a system or device that you want to study. Then you apply fluid flow physics to this prototype, and the software outputs a prediction of fluid dynamics. CFD is a sophisticated analysis technique. It not only predicts fluid flow behavior, but also transfer of heat, mass, phase change, chemical reaction, mechanical movement and stress or deformation of related solid structure.
