SURFACE ENGINEERING
ABSTRACT
From deep space missions to offshore exploration, when challenged by harsh operating conditions such as marginal lubrication, aggressive media and hostile environments, surface-engineering processes can provide effective protection against potential friction and wear problems.
This report explains the basic principles of surface engineering and tribology, before highlighting ways in which advanced coatings and surface treatments can provide improved tribological performance for high precision bearing systems. Examples are presented for wear resistant coatings, anti-corrosion treatments and thin film lubrication.
The plan of this report is first define wear, to comment on what is known and what is not known about the wear of mechanisms, and then to present the selection and specification information on the processes that can be used to reduce the damaging effects of the wear; metallic coatings, conversion coatings, diffusion treatments, surface hardening, of quench hardenable steels, thin-film coatings, high energy surface modifications as well as some processes that do not fit into any of these categories.
