International Conference on Transcultural Nursing At Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal

The increasing ethnic diversity of the society suggests a need for a reflection on cultural identity as part of development of nursing skill. The need for culturally appropriate and effective nursing and health care is challenging to health services. Nurses, as health team members need to keep abreast with transcultural
developments and information.

Introduction

Transcultural Nursing (TCN) is, designed to serve individuals, organizations, communities, and societies. Human caring is steeped in the cultures of its context and of the care giver's. Culturally competent care can only occur when culture care values are known and serve as the foundation for meaningful care. Advanced educational preparation in TCN enhances the practice of culturally competent care. TCN incorporates individual's cultural values, beliefs, and practices including sensitivity to the environment from which the individual comes and to which the individual may ultimately return.

About the Host

Manipal University (MU) situated in Manipal, the knowledge city of India, in its 57 years of existence has emerged as a leading higher education provider in India. This is the first Nursing College in India, accredited by ISO 9001: 2000, the college is accredited by NAAC and Environmental ISO 14001:2004. The certification is upgraded to ISO 9001:2008 in the year 2010. MCON is equipped with 6 clinical nursing departments and academic programs starting from Diploma in Nursing to Ph.D in Nursing. Each year various conferences and workshops are organized by MCON, Manipal for continuous improvement in Nursing. MCON, Mangalore and Bangalore offer BSc Nursing programs.

Climate

During November, Manipal will be warm and temperature ranges between 22° to 32°C.

How to reach Manipal

Manipal is well connected by road, rail and air. There are two main cities close to Manipal that serve as entry points - Udupi and Mangalore. Udupi is 5 km and Mangalore is 65km away.

Flying in

Manipal is connected to the rest of the world through the international airport at Mangalore, which takes an hour and half to travel by road. There are regular flights from Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai via Bangalore. Besides, most countries in the Gulf have direct flights to Mangalore. Those that do not have direct flights are connected otherwise. Pre-paid taxis are available at Mangalore airport.

By road

Manipal is well connected with all the major cities in Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra etc. Buses run between Mangalore and Manipal frequently. Direct buses are also available from Bangalore, Goa, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kerala and other cities.

By train

The closest railway station is Udupi and next is Mangalore. These railway stations lie on the Konkan route connecting the North and the South along the west coast.

• Delhi and Mumbai (to the north) and Ernakulam (to the south) are linked to Udupi station
• Mangalore station is connected to Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Calicut, Cochin, Trivandrum, Mumbai and other major cities
• Those travelling from Kolkata can travel via Chennai/ Mumbai/ Bangalore/Goa and then take a connecting train to Mangalore
• There is also a train operating from Jammu to Mangalore once a week

Abstract Submission

Abstracts for presentation (oral/poster) has to be sent to transcult.mcon@manipal.edu as an attachment, name of the thpresenter as file name on or before 30 September 2011. Abstract should contain title of the paper, name of the author(s), their affiliation, objectives of the study, methodology, results and conclusion within 300 words. (Font size-12, Font type - Arial, Software-MS Word 2007). Concept paper based on subthemes also will be received. All the submitted abstracts will be scrutinized by the scientific committee for Oral / Poster presentation. The author will receive an abstract acceptance / rejection intimation th through email from the organizing committee on or before 15 October 2011. Soft copy of full paper (MS Word) should be sent, st once the abstract is accepted on or before 31 October 2011.
