About Department

The Department of Statistics was established in August 1, 2006. The department offers courses in M.Sc. Biostatistics (4 semesters), Certificate course in Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Research Methodology (6 months) and Doctoral Programs in Biostatistics/ Statistics. The department also conduct a continuing executive education programme for Biostatisticians working with industry. The Department provides full expertise in the curriculum development and training in Biostatistics for Master in Public Health program.
The department also offers a major and minor in Statistics to post graduates and under graduates of various health science courses. The department has state of the art computational facility and have statistical software's SPSS, Stata and SAS.

Workshop Objectives

The main objective of this workshop is to introduce the various concepts of statistical inference, statistical modeling techniques, construction of prediction equations and other methodological issues involved in the analysis of epidemiological data. This course is also intended to provide computational aspects, develop skills in presenting results effectively and to improve the participant's ability to interpret the findings.

» Statistical modeling of epidemiological data based on
- Cross sectional studies
- Case control studies (Unmatched & Matched studies)
- Cohort studies (count data, time to event) and
- Nested case-control studies
» Construction of prediction equations
» Calculation of sample size in epidemiological studies
» Analysis of diagnostic tests
» Quality of epidemiological data and related issues

Target Audience

This workshop is targeted for biostatisticians, researchers from various professions such as epidemiology, medicine, public health, life science, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health sciences, who has interest over epidemiological studies.

Requirement

Candidates should have basic knowledge of statistics, epidemiological methods and some statistical softwares such as SPSS or Stata.

No. of participants

Limited to 30 and selection is purely on first cum first served basis.

Course Fee

5,000/- for each participant. This will include course material, lunch and tea. The fees should be paid by crossed demand draft drawn in favour of “Manipal University” payable at MANIPAL or UDUPI.

Deadline for receiving application 1 July, 2011.

Accommodation

Participants have to make their own arrangement for accommodation. The hotel room tariffs ranges from ` 400/- to ` 6,500/- per day. Details of hotels in Manipal are provided in this brochure and please contact them directly for accommodation. How ever the organizers will be happy to help you in finding accommodation.

How to Reach Manipal?

Manipal is well connected by road, rail and air. There are two main cities close to Manipal which serve as entry points - Udupi and Mangalore. Udupi is about 5 km from Manipal (10 min drive), whereas Mangalore is about 65 km (1 and a half hour drive).There are ample buses plying between Mangalore to Manipal. Udupi railway station is only 4 km from Manipal and the nearest airport is in Mangalore.
