National Workshop on Best Practices of MSW Management in India At PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh
Introduction
Solid waste generated by domestic, commercial & industrial activities is often indiscriminately disposed. Unscientific management of such waste leads to serious environmental problems. These problems are already acute in our cites and towns as the disposal facilities are not keeping pace with the quantum of waste being generated. It is not unusual to find heaps of garbage in disorganized manner at some locations of
our cities. As per estimates of CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board of India) only urban India is producing about 42.0 million tones of municipal solid waste (MSW) per year at present and this figure was only 6 million tones per year in 1947 i.e. seven fold increase in just 64 years of independence. Similarly Municipal
Corporation, Chandigarh is facing a lot of challenge in the management of the MSW. At present it is collecting daily 370 tones of MSW and handing it over to waste processing plant which converts it into
refused derived fuel (RDF) and dumps the rejected material in landfill at Dadumajra.
A one day workshop is being organized on the Best Practices of Management of MSW on 3rd November 2011 at PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh. The present workshop will focus attention on Best Practices of MSW Management in India and make an attempt to identify solutions for the problems arising at various levels of management of MSW with a special focus on Chandigarh.
