ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

ABSTRACT

This report explains the Adaptive Cruise Control system in detail. All the necessary components i.e. range sensor, curve sensors, actuators, display system are described and their respective strength and weaknesses are addressed. The system architecture contains system overview, control strategy and the concept for driver-ACC interaction. Afterwards the principles as well as the current technical limits of ACC systems are discussed. As an outlook, development trends for extended functionality are given for next generation of driver assistance systems.

INTRODUCTION

In this report the structure and functionality of ACC systems are discussed in detail. Although development of ACC systems begin in the late seventies, marketing is now possible after significant progress in both sensor and signal processing technologies. Sensors, on one hand, need to measure accurately the distance and relative speed to preceding vehicles, be easily and cheaply producible, and must meet the strict requirements of the automotive market. On the other hand, the signal processing must guarantee the desired resolution of the processed data while keeping rigorous timing constraints. Progress in these areas was partly triggered by the PROMETHEUS project, an European project involving all European research project involving all European car manufacturers, initializing similar activities in Japan and U.S.

In this report, the main components, which typically make up such an ACC system, are described. The control strategy and the system architecture of ACC system are explained. Then the principal limits, safety assured, as well as the simulated effects on the traffic flow are pointed out.

Short Term Course on Environment Management in Process Industries At National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar

Short Term Course on Environment Management in Process Industries At National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar

OBJECTIVES

The tremendous increase in world population needs greater requirement of resources to improve human life.
However, this in turn has resulted into a tremendous load on mother earth. Process industries are a major source of hazardous and non-hazardous pollutants. It is, therefore, important to balance the economic growth with the conservation of natural resources. Process industries need to switch over to the environmentally benign technologies. It is important to practice efficient management methods in processes for waste minimization, to develop cost effective waste treatment technologies, and to provide better working conditions to the workers in regard to health and safety. The objectives of the above course are
to bridge the gap between the academia and the industry, and to update the knowledge and skills of the technical teachers and process engineers in the current and emerging issues related to the areas of environment, health and safety.

COURSE CONTENT

The following topics, but not limited to, are proposed to be covered during the short term course:

* Pollution control and abatement
* Environment, health and safety laws
* Air and water quality standards
* Data acquisition and air dispersion modeling
* Novel bio-filtration methods
* Membrane assisted treatment methods
* Solid waste management
* Green and clean process technologies
* Modeling of pollution control systems
* Environment Impact assessment
* Inherently safer designs
* Process safety and risk assessment
* Security vulnerability methodologies
* Occupational safety and health
* Industrial hygiene
* Current and emerging issues
* Discussion on case studies

The faculty of the course will be the experienced personnel from teaching, education, research and consultancy organizations, field and industry such as IITs, NITs, CSIR etc.
