URBAN REGENERATION: THE ROLE OF SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION
Abstract
The size and number of cities are rapidly expanding and creating pressure on natural
resources, worldwide. Simultaneously there are aspirations to regenerate the urban
environment and ensure improvements. The construction industry has a major
responsibility in achieving these requirements in a sustainable manner. Indeed, it is
recognised that modern construction needs to preserve and manage effectively all
resources. This presentation discusses the role civil engineers play in creating desirable
urban environments, and gives some practical examples of sustainable construction. The
presentation will be based on research carried out by Professor Dhir and his colleagues at
the University of Dundee and he will also take the opportunity to discuss civil engineering
study in the UK, in general, and the University of Dundee, in particular.
